Banana & Chocolate Bread

Everybody loves Banana Bread and of course it’s a great way to use up those brown bananas lingering in the fruit bowl. This indulgent recipe adds a rich chocolaty flavour but balances out the guilt by replacing butter with hillfarm oil.

  • 100g Sultanas
  • 75g Milk chocolate
  • 175g Plain flour
  • 2 tsps Baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp Bicarbonate of soda
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • 25g Unsalted butter
  • 100ml hillfarm rapeseed oil
  • 150g Sugar
  • 2 Large eggs
  • 4 Very ripe bananas (mashed)


  1. Preheat oven to 170°C / gas mark 3
  2. Place the sultanas and chocolate into a bowl and leave in a warm place to melt, then mix together.
  3. Put flour, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda and salt into a medium sized bowl and mix together.
  4. In a large bowl mix melted butter and hillfarm rapeseed oil and add sugar.
  5. Beat in one egg at a time and add in the mashed banana mixture.
  6. Stir in the chocolate and sultana mixture whilst adding the vanilla extract.
  7. Add flour into the mixture and mix, a third at a time.
  8. Pour into a standard sized loaf tin lined with grease proof paper and bake for 60-90 minutes.
  9. Leave the loaf in the tray to cool, then place onto a cooling rack.
